I strapped on a pair of snowshoes and raced for the first time at the 2011 White River 8k in Mt Hood, Oregon where I was humbled by fellow Atlas teammate, Joe Gray. Within about a half mile, there is a steep 200 meter wall of a climb. As I crested that first hill only four minutes into the race-- my vision blurry, lungs burning and legs wobbly underneath me-- I thought to myself, "this is going to hurt…bad". It did. But my second place finish was enough for a spot on the start line at the 2011 USSSA National Championships. At nationals, I placed 3rd overall, joining 2 other Atlas teammates, Scott Gall (2nd place) and Greg Hexum (4th) on the national team podium. After my first season of racing, I've learned that there are few sports that will test your limits as much as snowshoe racing. It is also great fun and a great community of athletes. I'm looking forward to a full season of racing in 2012 after the Olympic Marathon Trials this January.
